Long term I’d like to see Fornals play in CM but at the moment he protects Cresswell better than any other player so it’s not really an option

Fornals and Lingard aren't really the same sort of player at all. Lingard is much more like Bowen than anyone else, if we're comparing with anyone at WHU.

Antonio had a decent game based on his previous performances.

He did look a bit more up for it and even put in a few half decent crosses.

His work rate, when bothered, was decent but for me his decision making (and the fact he is not getting any younger) is what holds him back.

We don't need someone to come in and support Antonio, we need someone to come in so Antonio can support them! If we want to progress, this for me is an area where we need to improve.

I'm not sure that Fornals and Lingard are the same type of player to be honest.

I think Lingard is a forward player where-as Fornals is a bit of everything. He loves to put his boot in as much as he loves a long range pass or a bit of a skill. I like that about him. He's a bit of a jack of all trades.

Fornals is a decent player, but Linagrd is a level above him. Fornals doesn't go for the throat of defenders, he will go so far then lay it off, where Linagrd has the confidence and ability to go that extra few yards, which can ultimately make the difference.

Not in the first half he didnt, he largely was near the half way line more than their box and went backwards and sideways alot.

I like him, he just isnt good enough going forward to be a LW for a top 6 side.

Fornals was excellent yesterday. He took on and beat his man a few times. What game were you watching, Rossal?

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Wolves - Official Match Thread
Great win, Wolves are a decent outfit so a big 3 points looking at the table and with Scousers up next

Thought first 15 we sat back too much, let them have too much possession and dictate the play. Then we started to press them in their half and took control of the game and created the best of the chances.

Antonio was much better, workrate was improved and hassled from the front much more. A few shit touches and lost possession a few times but also won the ball back alot and linked the play up.

Zouma and Rice were outstanding, thought Johnson did well aswell. Lanzini makes a big difference, plays it tight and takes the ball in tight areas and ball carries well.

Fornals worked hard and did well at LWB but still dont think he offers enough going forward in the LW position. First half his starting position was way too deep and every touch is backwards or sideways. Never takes anyone on or runs in behind and nowhere near enough a goal threat for that position. We simply need more quality out there to be a top 4/6 side. Thats the difference between him and Lingard. Bowen was a little quiet, but a great win and hopefully breeds some confidence going into Wednesday and next week

Sky showed an interesting stat re;Antonio on Sunday before the game.

Compared to when he was scoring, he's now getting half the amount of shots per game. Added to what was being said about the way teams now approach us and what he's got to do to get involved, it's clear oppositions have marked him out as a danger and are paying a lot more attention to him. He's just not getting the space he used to, he's often isolated and he's getting really rough treatment from defenders and refs are letting it go.

Gave it a good go yesterday and played a lovely composed pass for Soucek. Really want to see him get a goal.

I thought it was a good performance from him.

It was also another game that proves not having competition/back for him is an utterly ridiculous decision, as he was gassed out after 70 mins.

A really solid win that.

Best we have played in the league since December. Antonio looked a lot better too.

I do agree he should've come off sooner as he was fucked and again started making errors.

But aside from that really positive.

I see MOANWELL is having a dig

This from a man (i use the term loosely) who has predicted as I recall our last four games against Watford, Leicester, Newcastle & Wolves as LOSS , LOSS, LOSS & LOSS.
2 wins & 2 draws must be eating him up

We havent been great recently but some moaners need to have a rest. Ideally in a weighted sack in a fast flowing river

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Wolves - Official Match Thread
Antonio, for the first 70 minutes, was a step change better than previous performances this year and did well to set up our winner.

He was clearly out of puff eventually and this tiredness affected his concentration to the extent he gave the ball away, miss placed passes and instead of an asset became a liability.

None of this was Antonio’s fault, it was clear to see what had come to pass, but it begs the question why did Moyes not do something about it.? The fitter the team the better able it is to maintain concentration and see games out. To do this we need our front players to take the strain off defenders and keep the opponents on their defensive toes. The optimistic/hopeful ball out of defence just comes back immediately when all there is to pick it up is a bloke completely knackered and out of puff.

Antonio had a decent game yesterday and that was clear to see. I’m not sure how anyone can think otherwise.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Wolves - Official Match Thread
Move to 3-5-2 was very effective.

It allows Soucek and Rice to both play slightly higher and means our overload is through the centre of the pitch rather than via our, recently, ineffective full backs.

It means that the defenders, mainly Cresswell's, passing angle is improved to play the ball into the channels for Antonio which saw him brought into the game more.

In a 4231 system we have seen teams have lots of joy against us by employing a full press and we knew before the game that the deeper lines of Wolves would really suit us.

It will be interesting to see how the 352 holds up against a full press.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Wolves - Official Match Thread
Antonio only looked ok yesterday because by comparison to his games since November not hitting row a would have been an improvement.

He was less crappier than usual yesterday and still managed to give the ball away loads and in dangerous positions.

Not sure if we’ve ever had a worse player that has been so well supported by fans. We’ve had worse obviously, but normally the fans don’t back them as much

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Wolves - Official Match Thread
That was much better from the whole team. Excellent but we do need to put away more of the chances we create, it would certainly relieve the tension for both the team and the fans!
